FAQ – Posing & Lightning Techniques

I recently got a few questions concerning the way I work and more precisely concerning posing and lightning techniques, so I figured I would talk about this a little bit in this blog entry (obviously there is a lot to cover, more than what I am talking about here).

For me, it is essential to always guide the person I am shooting. The goal is obviously to capture this person at his / her best but I am aware that posing in front of a camera isn’t natural for everyone. And that’s where I intervene. Even if I want my model to look as natural as possible, I have to guide him / her, give him / her tips and instructions. This will help in making him / her more comfortable and to gain confidence. Communication is key. I will never stop chatting, giving subtle hints and most of all I will mime! I am always miming, I take the pose, I’m rolling on the floor, I show my bride how I want her to kiss the groom. It helps lighten the mood and gives visual cues.

I even have one more little secret: I pratice posing at home… in front of a mirror… Yeah it’s a bit shameful, but in the end, this is the best way to make sure that a pose is working. And most of the times, only my cats witness this.

On the matter of light, let’s just say that I am always shooting off-camera. I never shoot with a flash on camera. This may be a additional constraint, but I really think that it gives me an additional level of control on what I want to achieve. So yeah, even when I am shooting a wedding, I use off-camera flash. I don’t pretend to be a guru concerning light mastering, but I sure am anal about the quality of light I use. I love mixing multiple light sources whenever I can. I could talk hours about lightning techniques, but in the end, the goal is to be able to shoot flattering portrait even if the surroundings are not flattering at all.

And to illustrate everything I said, here are some pics where I experiment poses, with different types of clothing and fabrics but where I also make sure that the final output is somewhat flattering, as my living room is actually a complete mess at the moment. (Yeah sorry, you’ll excuse me but there is no gorgeous model this time).

Melisa – Your Place, Your Time

Location: Shanghai, Jinan District

Melisa is a very free-spirited girl, I really like the way she thinks as we share a lot of personal beliefs. She was quite unhappy with a her life back in Malaysia: she felt like she wasn’t really living to her fullest, and most of all she needed to shake things up.

When she got the opportunity, she dropped her job and decided to travel in Asia and right now she is experiencing things in Shanghai. She was able to quit her safe comfortable but boring life and she embraced change without a second thought. This is quite courageous and this is something I really admire.

The moments we spent together were very special, we ended talking about a lot of things. And I really wish her the best.

Joen & Kit – Your Place, Your Time

Location: Hôtel Sezz

Hair & Make Up : Meizi Wu

Joen & Kit are young, fun, sweet and so in sync with each other. When they contacted me for this Maternity shoot, I knew that we were going to have a good time and we sure did.

Kit is very affectionate toward Joen but still he likes to play tricks on her. They were both very relaxed for this day. The shoot was very glam just how I like it. They were both gorgeous and I am sure that they will be wonderful parents!
